Frequently Asked Questions

Solar, answered straight

The honest answers to what Pittsburgh-area homeowners actually ask before going solar with VirginSolar. Still curious? Ask us anything.

Is this a third-party energy supplier switch?

No. A supplier switch just changes who bills you for the same grid power. With VirginSolar you generate your own electricity from panels on your roof, so you are buying less from the utility in the first place. It is real on-site production, not a paper swap.

Do I have to buy the solar panels?

No. On a power purchase agreement (PPA) we own, install, monitor, and maintain the system at no upfront cost to you. You simply pay for the clean power it produces - usually at a lower rate than the utility charges. There is no equipment loan and no lien on your home.

Do I pay my old electric bill plus the solar payment?

Your goal is a lower total. The panels cover most of your usage, and you pay VirginSolar for that solar production. You stay connected to the grid for nights and heavy-use days, so a small utility charge remains. Add the two together and the typical homeowner pays less than their old all-utility bill from day one.

Will my roof leak?

A correctly installed system should not. Our crews flash and seal every roof penetration to manufacturer spec, and the workmanship is warrantied. We also inspect your roof before install - if it needs work first, we will tell you up front rather than mounting panels on a roof that is near end of life.

Can I remove the panels if I need to get my roof done?

Yes. If your roof needs repair or replacement, the array can be removed and reinstalled. We coordinate the temporary removal and put the system back afterward so your roof work can happen without losing your solar.

What if I sell my house?

A PPA is designed to travel with the home. Most buyers are happy to inherit a lower power bill, so the agreement transfers to the new owner at closing. If a buyer prefers otherwise, there are buyout and transfer options we will walk you through.

Does solar work in Pittsburgh?

Yes. Western Pennsylvania gets plenty of usable sunlight, and panels still produce on cloudy and cold days - cool, bright weather is actually good for output. We size every system for local conditions and your real usage, not a sunny-state assumption.

Will solar work during a power outage?

A standard grid-tied system shuts off during an outage for line-worker safety, so panels alone will not power your home when the grid is down. If backup power matters to you, we can pair the system with a home battery that keeps essentials running through an outage.

What affects my solar price?

Mainly your roof (size, angle, and shading), how much electricity you use, and your local utility rate. A quick site review lets us size the system accurately and show you exactly what your VirginSolar rate and savings would be - no guessing.
